The countdown clock is ticking faster and faster time
is almost up. Once all the votes are cast and counted, will women's rights
supporters be able to say we did everything we could to protect our future?
Election Day is only 25 days away. Scary, isn't it the prospect
of four more years under the same administration. And the next four years
won't be just like the last they'll be even worse! Voters for equality
and justice must be out in full force at the polls. Let's show the prognosticators
and pollsters what a real gender gap looks like!
We can do it, but we must switch our already noble efforts into high
gear. And we can't do it without YOU. Read on to find out how you can
truly make a difference on Nov. 2.
What You Can Do: Five Ways to Help Get Out the Vote
1. Take a week (or two) and join NOW PAC in one of our swing state Get-Out-the-Women's-Vote
campaigns! If you'd like to join our efforts in Colorado, Florida, Ohio,
Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington or Wisconsin, email Linda
Berg or call 202-628-8669 x121. These states were chosen because they
have NOW-endorsed candidates in close races, marriage discrimination initiatives
on the ballot, or the need for a large number of women and progressive
voters to turn out at the polls.
2. If you're in one of the above target states, plan a get-out-the-vote
event and post it on the America
Votes and America Coming Together
calendars. If you're not in a battleground state, consider donating funds
to NOW to support field organizers or contribute to progressive candidates
in those states.
3 . It's not too late to join our exciting 10
for Change online campaign. The site is new and improved and packed
full of election tips, articles and useful information. Some of the steps
are even easier now!
4. Download, print and distribute NOW's Get
Out the Vote flyer reminding women's rights supporters why they must
go to the polls.
5. Sign and circulate NOW's petition
demanding that the presidential candidates and congressional leaders stand
up for women and girls. We need their leadership to end discrimination
and restore women's rights by supporting initiatives and policies that
promote health, safety and opportunity for all of our nation's girls,
women and families, not just for the privileged few.
Still not convinced? 10 Reasons for Feminists and Progressives to Get
Out the Vote:
Because the current administration and their right-wing, anti-women allies
have:
- Escalated discrimination and pay inequality
- Rolled back women's educational opportunity gains
- Expanded the gulf between rich and poor, and placed poor women and
children at even greater risk
- Promised to return poverty to the lives of retired workers by undermining
Social Security
- Severely restricted health care programs
- Cut and misdirected funding for the Violence Against Women Act and
mishandled incidents of sexual violence against military women
- Nominated numerous regressive, anti-women federal judges
- Closed women's offices and appointed government officials opposed
to women's rights
- Pushed discriminatory constitutional amendment banning marriage equality
- Restricted women and girls' reproductive rights and access to contraception
and health care
